SV Valhalla - Missing at Sea (North Atlantic)

On 20 May 2025, I had to make the difficult decision to abandon my sailboat, Valhalla, in the North Atlantic. A broken boom and the failure of self-steering equipment (windvane and autopilot) made it extremely difficult, and physically exhausting, to make any real progress toward shore. Continuing under those conditions carried a significant risk to my life, and I chose the course of action that ensured I would survive.

She was left afloat and under control at the time of rescue, but unable to be safely navigated single-handed in the prevailing conditions.
